I've been looking for slightly louder axlebacks for my 2006 GT conv. auto. I had pretty much decided on GTAs and understood that was what was on Shelbys. By accident one day I happened upon the Ford Direct Parts site and discovered that there are different stock mufflers listed for Mustang GT autos and manuals. Then I found a set of take-off mufflers from a GT500 on eBay and decided that was what I was looking for and got them for a very reasonable price. When they came, I thought they looked an awful lot like the stock mufflers I already have on my car. After doing some research, I read on another site that the mufflers on a GT500 and an auto Mustang GT are the same (and they sure look like it to me). Does anyone know if this is so? Are there different stock mufflers for manuals and autos? If I want slightly louder and I already have the same mufflers as on the GT500, what should I consider next?

I'm almost 100% sure that the mufflers are the same for the GT and the GT500...They look EXACTLY the same. As far as mufflers for manual and auto, it doesn't matter, they are the same. I have the Borla Stingers on mine (which is an auto), but I would consider them louder than "slightly." The GTAs sound like a good choice for you because they're not obnoxious and the tips look good. Other than that, any of the touring style systems that are made would be good.

If you're only looking for a slightly louder sound then I'd recommend Flowmaster for you. Only concern would be the drone that you may experience with your auto since you can't as easily control your RPMs as a manual. Overall though - I think that's about the right sound level you'd be looking for and it has a better tone that stock as well.

Not sure if he'll even get back to the board - just found the thread and it's ~1 week old :dunno:

BTW - if you plan to keep the stock midpipe then you may want to consider a slightly more aggressive system like Borla, Bassani, Magnapacks or SLP. If you're worried about being too loud, then I'd probably say away from SLP, but the other three can remain "more tame" with the stock midpipe (notice the quotes....more tame is relative). These systems will tend to drone less which may benefit you more since you have an automatic.

bassani is a nice choice that i would probably choose if i didnt want it "very" loud

imo the gta's are not that impressive...maybe a little deeper than stock...but not very noticable...
