I am replacing my 1985 v6 with a 5.0 and want to put a completely new exhaust system on while I've got the thing apart. Emissions aren't a concern. I want a good smooth sound that is not too loud for a daily driver; like a purring cat! What's the best rout to go for a completely new setup like this?

If you want a smooth deep exhaust that's not too loud, i'd would do long tube headers with a catted h pipe, and maybe a Magnaflow catback (not the Magnapacks).

I've heard this before, and it sounded very deep and smooth, with a nice clean roar at WOT.

so I guess I will start with some long tube headers. How about those cats? Since I don't have to pass emissions tests here in Texas on such an old vehicle are they still necessary? Does the tubing have to be special and if so what brand is a good one that has a kit already made for this year model mustang?

so, how about headman long headers, a magnaflow cat-back kit and an h-pipe with or without cat?

I'm not familiar with Headman headers, but MAC and BBK are great for the money.

You stated that you didn't want it too loud, in which case you'll want to stay away from a o/r mid pipe.

Magnaflow, SLP, and Pypes all make good aftermarket cats.

As far as the right combo, it really depends on you! How loud do you want it? Usually the louder go (at a certain point) the more quality you'll sacrifice in terms of tone, deepness/smooth, etc.

Damn, I didn't even know the Mustang had a V6 back in '85. Is it the same basic V6 as the 94-04 engine?
