This is a new gen stang. Maybe they share the same chassis... is that why? But I can tell you that the new 2010 looks NOTHING like gen 5! NOTHING!!! A total redesign inside, out and under the hood. Why call it s197? Not fair. Ford hasn't made that official yet. Correct me if I'm wrong about that. I can't find anything to back this up.

Yes it is still a S-197. It all has to do with the chassis and it is the exact same as the 05-09s. They may not look real similar but when you get down to the drive train or suspension they are exactly the same but with some minor "tweaks" I suppose. So there is no doubt in my mind that the new Mustang will be considered an S-197. Go onto a website that sells Mustang parts, like Ninos shop, and you will most likely see parts listed for 05-10 since they use so many of the same parts minus cosmetics.

yeah, I don't think the 5th gen's look anything like the 6th gen's. I test drove many a 2008 and 2009 before I decided on the 2010. I took a shot in the dark hoping the new gen. would offer better performance and handling. I special ordered the 2010 GT in April and took delivery the end of July. The handling and suspension seems greatly improved in the 2010. Maybe due to the 19" wheel option, I dunno, but there's a significant difference. I notice even under the hood, it looks different. So I have to say from first hand experience, 6th gen is a redesign all around. If the code name only has to do with the chassis and the chassis is in fact the same as 2009, then I agree with you, the code name won't change.

My confusion comes in because Ford is officially calling this a new gen. in a couple of press releases and a Ford YouTube vid I saw. So, I'm just throwing this out there... maybe the codename has more to do with the bigger picture... the 'overall'. If that's the case, then the codename will change. So, I guess that's my question, do you know it to be a fact that the codename is all about the chassis?

I hate to say it, but I wouldn't trust what some of these websites that are selling parts are recommending for 2010 just yet. From what I've seen there are some sites that don't even know that 2010 is a redesign and considered the new gen. ...that's just fyi for those 2010 owners, shopping this early in the game. If you're interested in parts for the 2010, I would definitely write the site and start dialog on the subject.

The code names given to Mustangs has to do with the platform their are built upon. For example, the 1996 thru 2004 Mustangs are all considered SN95 even though the 99-04 Mustangs look much different externally compared to the 1997. Some people call the 99-04 Mustangs New Edge, and while that is correct, that refers only to the styling of the car, not the platform. So, yes, the 2010 is a S197 Mustang because underneath the skin, it's based on the same platform as the 2005-09. The handling and engine are tuned better (from what I've read) compared to the 2009, but it's all the same major mechanicals.

The 99-04's are called SN-95s and they look nothing like the 94-98's..

5Liter95, I think my 97 looks very similar to the 99-04's inside and out. Besides 94-04 are all considered fourth gen. The point I'm making is that Ford put two different gens (5th and 6th) on the same chassis. Has Ford ever done that before? I don't think so. Correct me if I'm wrong on that though.:dunno:

Nino, thx for the insight on the subject, good explanation!

I think that the shock absorbers (http://www.carparts.com/Replacement-Shock-Absorbers/600022361.car) should also be regarded for its great suspension. I really like this model.
