How will these gears affect my mpg? and will it make a noticeable difference in acceleration?

not on your car...I belive the late model stangs come with 3.55 so that won't be a big difference

well, will 4.10s kill my mpg?

i think the v6's have 3.31's...3.73's would prob only cost you a couple mpg's...is it auto or manual?

With the V6 I'd go with the 4.10s - you're car already does better than mine with gas :p

if you do it dont waste your time with anything less that 4.10. The only way you wil really notice any mpg drop is because you will be tempted to get on it more to fell the new acceleration youve gained

^+1... or if you do a lot of highway driving at 80 mph...

in response to that, i drive mine every day and at 55-70 i stay in 4th cruising at 2800-3000 rpms, because 5th drops rpm down to little less that 2000 and it drags my engine it feels. which would be the best gear set for me? i think 3.73 so i dont have to keep winding out 4th gear and could actually use 5th more often.

i actually think i got better mpg when i stepped up to a 4.10....i donno....maybe because most of my driving around town was towards the "end" of 4th and with the 4.10 i can cruise at speeds of 45mph or so in 5th without "bogging" down, so to speak

I googled it and got 3 or 4 different hits that said 3.31

i know in the 06's the gt's had 3.31's for stockers if it was an auto...

ok, well if its 3.31's then won't i notice a difference with 3.73's?

i would say yes

I still say 4.10

automatic go with 4:10!! you can crawl under the car and look at the differential and theres usualy a metal tag hanging off the rear cover. It will have a 4 numbers something like 3 <random number or letter> 31, or 55 or 27 depending on what final ratio is. The random number or letter is in between the series of numbers not sure what it means.

automatics atleast a 4:10 if not up to a 4:30 if mpg is not that important, but in a v6 you'll still do pretty good on mpgs.

hmmm, well if i get 4.10s will the mpg be the same, less, or more with a CAI, aluminum driveshaft, and a tuner?
blueblazes
01-06-2008, 11:15 PM
well by reducing rotating mass in driveline you increase hp and, you will increase gas mileage but not by a noticeable amount. The 4:10's will definately hurt your mileage. Getting a tuner with proper tune will help though because your fuel trims should be alot more accurate and the car wont be as rich as with a factory tune.
Either way your gonna lose some mpg changing gear ratios.

hmmm, I want to go for 3.73's for gas but I would love 4.10's

meh ive been using the stock ford electronics and im on the virge of 700 flywheel hp with 0 problems. copper plugs are best plugs you can get!

O ya, do they make aluminum flywheel for the v6?

the difference between the 3.73 and 4.10 is very minimal regaurding mpg

so my highway mpg will go down a little and city up a little because it gets up to speed with less effort?
DropTopStang
01-08-2008, 08:16 PM
yeah, my city driving went up alot but highway went down maybe just 1 or 2 at most...I say 4.10's man...if u get 3.73's, you will just always be wondering "what if" you had gotten taller gears
2006v6
01-08-2008, 10:33 PM
hmmm, well i talked to a guy with another 6 and he said the 3.73s made a huge difference, but your right, I would be wondereing what if lol

Not to dig up an old thread, But i have a 04 Manual GT, and have been contemplating a change in gears myself.
Stock, First Gear Feels a little Short id like to be able to rev it out a little longer with a little more punch before shifting in second, and 5th gear, has that tugging sensation because RPMs are too low at 50-70, i find myself, driving 60 in 4th alot... but occasionally, i push 80 in 3rd on the highway if i want to pick up fast... I personally was looking at the 3:73's because 90% of the time im not a very aggressive driver.. i also plan to upgrade to the aluminum drive shaft, Fenderwell intake , Long tubes high flow cats, and flowmasters.... to keep it street legal, and maintain that classic Mustang sound and to get rid of some back pressure and give the engine some well needed oxygen. No supercharging plans in the future, just simple mods, that i hope will push me up to 300rwhp... Pulleys, exhaust, intake, tune, better plugs, battery upgrade... just one step at a time
so my question is, for my driving/upgrading plans and habits... with NO intent for Street/track racing... which gears should i get?
and does anyone know the RWHP for a bone stock NewEdge Gt?

well to get 300 rwhp out of a 2v you will need more than basic bolt ons cams will be need at the least. I have had 3.73 and 4.10s in the 03 GT and suggest the 4.10s...but its really up to you.

like 03muscle said, you will need more than bolt-ons to get 300hp. Greg put cams and a bunch of other bolt ons and got around 286 I believe.
As far as gears go, just get the 4.10's and don't look back. As for first gear, it will be shorter. The taller the gear the shorter 1st gear is going to be. Taller gears will definitely help with acceleration through all gears tho and especially 5th gear. You will actually almost feel like you are in 4th when you are actually in 5th.

are there any good sites.. with dyno charts, and cams upgrades?
